The British stunner bears the name of the legendary Formula 1 racing driver, Ayrton Senna da Silva. The Brazilian racer was also a three-time champion. Senna’s reputation is notorious for his exceptional powers of concentration and single-minded focus on the track. He has an “unconquerable spirit that has always been alive at McLaren” and so the car is said to project Ayrton’s racing spirit and performance.

Ayrton’s nephew Bruno Senna, a racing driver and McLaren Ambassador, said: “Our family is extremely proud of the naming of the new Ultimate Series McLaren Senna. This is the first project that really connects with Ayrton’s racing spirit and performance. The McLaren Senna honours my uncle because it is so utterly dedicated to delivering a circuit experience that allows a driver to be the best they can possibly be.”

Limited Numbers + Price

500 cars have been planned for production, however, they are already sold. Interestingly, all but one was sold prior to its official debut. The last one standing was auctioned and sold for $2.67 million with all the proceeds going to the Ayrton Senna Foundation. The Foundation was founded by Senna’s sister to support children in poor and developing countries.

Pricing details for the U.K. market have only been released. The original price tag of the vehicle is £750,000, calculates to approximately $1 million. But a portion of every car sold will go to benefit the foundation.

McLaren Senna

The McLaren Senna is powered by the most powerful engine ever installed in a McLaren road car. Fitted with a brutal 4.0-litre V8 engine, the Senna puts out 789 horsepower/ 588 kilowatts and 800 Newton-meters of torque. Its engine makes use of technologies from motorsport and provides “lightning-quick throttle responsiveness.”

In addition, the new Senna is an extremely lightweight vehicle, weighing in at only 1,198 kilograms (without any fluids) and is 85 kg lighter than the 720S. Furthermore, it is the lightest road car since the legendary F1 from the 1990s. This was achieved by extensive use of carbon fiber and includes a carbon fiber chassis and body panels. McLaren also developed lightweight components for the powertrain.

The design of the car includes an aggressive aerodynamic body kit and a massive hydraulically-powered rear wing. Why such a big wing you ask? The rear wing acts as a downforce generator and an airbrake. The car also has a carbon fiber rear diffuser.

McLaren Senna Interior 1

The Senna’s interior is driver-focused and not equipment-heavy and this was done to keep weight down. McLaren’s designers also resisted the temptation to remove the passenger seat. Even still, interior space is very limited. It’s also said that two Senna’s won’t have the exact same thin carbon seats as every seat will be tailored for its owner.

Besides the fact that the wing on the back of the car is massive, it is one of the most advanced features on a road car. At its highest point, the carbon fiber wing sits merely 1,219 millimetres / 48 inches above the road. And to deliver an optimal amount of downforce at all times, the wing has hydraulic actuators that continuously adjust the wing’s position. Apart from this, under heavy braking, the wing also doubles as an airbrake.

A unique feature on the Senna is the see-through glass on the door. Gorilla Glass is used to ensure optimal durability but it adds a bit of weight. The window switches and the release mechanisms are placed in the console above the driver’s head. It is also where the engine start button is placed.
