Volvo South Africa gave me the great opportunity to be one of the first in South Africa to drive the Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge full battery electric car. I had the Volvo XC40 Recharge for the weekend.

3 things I love about the Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge electric car

1 – Adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist

The first is the adaptive cruise and lane-keep assist is spot on. It recognises even the faintest of lines on the road. It probably is one of the best systems of all the electric cars I have driven.

2 – Integration of Google maps

The second thing is the integration of Google maps into the Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge software. In my opinion OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) shouldn’t try to build their own mapping systems. Google has mastered the art of updating accurate mapping in the country.

Volvo has managed to create a system that displays the maps and your current position on the front display of the electric car. The full route/journey is then also displayed on a map on the center console. Having both the views available side by side is a big convenience when driving.

To add – the P8 Recharge has included charging stations, embedded within Google Maps.

3 – Setting the charge time for the Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge electric car

The third thing that I haven’t seen in most first-generation electric cars is the ability to set the charge times.

The Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge electric car gives you two ways to do this:

  • You can set the percentage (%) or level of charge you would like the car to stop charging at – e.g. 80% or 90%. Volvo in fact suggests on this screen that one charges to only 90%, in order to preserve the battery.
  • You are able to set the actual charge start and stop times (charging window). You can set the electric car up to charge during a specific time period in a day. Which creates convenience for you no matter where you are and also allows you to take advantage of:
    • Eskoms low demand periods (early hours of the morning).
    • Low tariff times, reducing the cost of the charge.

In summary, there are many features I loved about this Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge electric car. I will be looking forward to seeing what EV’s come out of Volvo in the future.
