SUVs are beginning to take over our roads. Almost every automaker, apart from the high-end likes of Ferrari and McLaren, have an SUV on offer. SUV choices range from affordable vehicles like the Honda CR-V to six-figure options like the Bentley Bentayga. Much like models in every other segment, there is much variety in SUV offerings.
Although a booming success (SUV market), there are models whose lifespan were cut short. This list covers some SUVs that have been discontinued. Some have been missed while some are not even that well known. Would you like to see any of these make a comeback?
Subaru Tribeca (SUV)
Inspired by the B9X concept, the Tribeca was Subaru’s competing model against seven-seat SUVs for nine years. It wasn’t as successful as its rivals however it sold a considerable amount. The Subaru Tribeca was a great move forward for the brand.
In America alone the Tribeca took several awards that included titles like “Top Safety Pick,” and 2006 “Interior of the Year”. The Tribeca was succeeded by the Ascent in 2015.
Nissan Xterra
The Xterra was one of those compact SUV models that were based on a pickup chassis. It shared a platform with the Nissan Frontier pickup. The model was marketed as a rugged and affordable SUV for young buyers who enjoy the outdoors. However, it was popular for its practicality and durability. The Xterra was discontinued in 2015 without any announcement of a successor. SUVs based on pickups may make a small comeback given the SUV craze.
Mazda 5
The Mazda dropped in at a time when crossover SUVs were all the hype. It was more commonly represented as a MPV in some markets. It offered a neat package with seating for six passengers. However, it wasn’t a hit with sales. The model was discontinued and Mazda moved focus on SUVs like the CX-3 and CX-9. These also sold at a higher price than the minivan.
Hummer
The Hummer was a big hit when it released but it received many mixed reviews. It was one of those vehicles you either loved or hated. Its love/hate complexities may also differ amongst markets. In 2011, GM tried to sell off the Hummer brand to a Chinese company but the deal fell through and GM shut it down. The reason for this was that the Hummer was operating at a loss.
Land Rover Defender
Built for the outdoors, the Land Rover Defender is an icon for the brand. Unfortunately, with modern day tech and safety features it falls a little behind. There’s a new rugged off-roader going to take its place soon. But it has been said that newer models can’t truly replace the original Defender. Not to say that newer models aren’t capable, anything but. If anything they are highly capable and respectively luxurious. I’m certain though that Landy owners wouldn’t mind an old one with new tech even if it lacks in the luxurious department. Costs would be down and same great off-roader, would be deemed a win-win.
