BMW introduces the M5 “Competition Edition”

Got 2 Bar to splash on a car? Well thats what you’ll pay for a BMW M5 Competition Edition

As a tech and motoring enthusiast. BMW’s “M” (which refers to BMW’s M Division in Munich, Germany) is one of my favourite letters. The petrolhead in me was very interested to learn about this M5 Competition Edition.

The M5 is arguably the world’s most successful ‘high performance business sedan’, to put it in BMW’s words. The BMW M5 Competition Edition has been tweaked to set it apart from the rest of the M5 family. With power output increased to 441 kW, and torque of 700 Nm. This makes it one of the most powerful BMW’s. It will sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in only 3.9 seconds. Powering this beast, is a 4.4-litre, high-revving V8 engine, with BMW M Twin Turbo technology for that sudden kick in the backside.

Performance equipment is standard

As an expensive and very exclusive, limited edition BMW, this car is kitted out with plenty of performance equipment as standard. This in the form of the Competition Package. Which includes lowering of the car by 10mm, and a much firmer setup of spring, damper systems, and stabilizers. The settings for the Active M rear differential (on all M5’s) contributes to even more sure-footedness. Steering feel is more direct. And to top matters, M5’s stability control system has been reprogrammed. It comes in Mineral White and Carbon black – both metallic colours. Only 200 are available worldwide, but 6 white ones are destined for South African shores. It wouldn’t surprise me if they were all sold out already.

The interior

The Competition Edition comes with unique 20-inch Jet Black alloy wheels with mixed tyres: 265/35 ZR20 at the front, 295/30 ZR20 at the rear. M Performance Carbon fibre accents further adorn the M5’s sporty exterior.

On the inside, the colour scheme is predominantly black leather with white topstitching, with M multifunctional seats for front passengers. Other convenience features include the 1,200 watt Bang & Olufsen High End Surround Sound System, BMW Head-Up Display, Comfort Access, Lane Departure Warning or the optional BMW Driving Assistant, heated seats at the front or the through-loading system. The BMW M5 Competition Edition will be available from R1 964 500, and available in SA from November 2016. Would I like one? Well, it has an M in its name and a V8-engine, doesn’t it…Take a look and tell me you wouldn’t want one too…
