Staying Connected
It’s no secret that I am one of modern technology’s biggest fans. The internet has transformed our lives in a so many ways and as a result no-one has looked back since. Staying connected has arguably become a need and no longer a want
Being an early adopter, I am super connected. From my Apple TV’s to Apple HomeKit. If Apple built fridges, I’d buy one.
Yes, I am bordering on being a cult follower of Apple – not just because I love Apple products, but also because of the iconic Steve Jobs’s whole outlook on life and business. He just had a completely different way of thinking. Steve Jobs was an iconoclast – someone who criticizes or opposes beliefs and practices that are widely accepted. Does that sound like Steve Jobs? Absolutely, and I love it..
My Favourite Steve Jobs quotes:
“It doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do, we hire smart people and they tell us what to do.”
“My job is to not be easy on people. My job is to make them (people) better.” (The best they can be).
“Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful, that’s what matters to me.”
“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.”
“Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end, because once you get there, you can move mountains.”
And finally:
“My favourite things in life don’t cost any money. It’s really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time.”
It was a sad day for me when he passed away in October 2011 – the world had lost an absolute legend.
Free Wi-fi in the City of Johannesburg
Staying Connected
While on the technology topic however, something that is cheering me up while there are floods in Ghana and airport attacks in Istanbul, is that The City of Johannesburg has rolled free Wi-Fi hot spots in major Gauteng townships. #exciting.
Those who can afford to have Wi-fi at home and smartphone contracts, don’t often realise how hard life would be without access to the internet. To experience this, try navigating your way through an unknown part of town with a dead phone battery and no sat-nav in your car!
For the people who can now use these free Wi-fi hotspots, it means the world. School kids can do research for their homework, and be in the know of what’s going on in the outside world. But most importantly, people are given the opportunity to do things such as applying for jobs, or sending off varsity applications. There are now 400 hotspots in Soweto alone.
Do take time to read the article, it was in the Sunday Times. It certainly is a feel-good story and pass along the message – staying connected.
